Three Reasons You Should Consider Air Conditioning Your Basement

Blog

Whether you're installing a new central air system or just contemplating a portable air conditioner, you may run into a fairly common question: Should you air condition your basement? Many individuals boost the insulation between their basement and their home rather than air conditioning the entire area, but there are some reasons why you might want to reconsider.

1. It Cuts Down on Humidity

Air conditioning cuts down drastically on humidity--and humidity is one of the major causes of damage within a basement. Of course, you could also install a dehumidifier, but an air conditioning system will reduce humidity automatically while also improving the overall quality and comfort of the air. Humidity leads to mold, mildew, and damaged items, such as swollen wood, peeling paint, and cracked flooring.

2. It Prevents Damage to Your Stored Items

Many people use their basement as their primary storage space in addition to their attic. Climate-controlling your basement will reduce the temperature extremes that these stored items go through. Otherwise you could find that the precious knick-knacks you stored underneath your home are no longer in perfect condition. You don't need to run the air conditioner all the time, but you can at least prevent the more severe temperature spikes.  This is especially important if you are storing antiques because they tend to be more temperature-sensitive.

3. It Provides a Safe Space for Pets

If you have pets in your home, you probably already know that it's very easy and dangerous for them to overheat. But it can be very costly to keep your entire home cooled when you're out. Instead, you can heat the basement only with either a portable air conditioner or controlled central air solution. This is an excellent alternative to having to leave your pets outside all day, where they can also experience temperature extremes. With a doggy door or kitty door placed in the basement entrance, you can even give your pet the option of retreating to cooler air whenever they feel uncomfortable.

Air conditioning a basement isn't as expensive as it may sound, especially if you're already considering the installation of a central air system. Basements are extremely well-insulated, simply through the virtue of being underground. So even if you aren't certain whether you really want your basement air conditioned, it may be cheaper long-term to get a central air in the basement now rather than decide that you want it later on.
