Want To Upgrade Your Garage Door? Paint On Fake Windows

Business Blog

If you're a new homeowner, you probably want the best looking home around, especially on the outside. While there are many projects that you can take on to make your home the one that others want to keep up with, some can be quite expensive. However, you can make your old garage door look new by painting on faux windows, and it only takes a little imagination and one afternoon.

Step 1: Procure Your Materials

Supplies you will need include:

  • black reflective paint
  • a medium paint brush
  • painters tape
  • measuring tape
  • a level
  • a pencil
  • liquid dish soap
  • a bucket
  • a rag
  • a garden hose
  • paint thinner
  • plastic sheets (optional)

Step 2: Clean the Door

Fill the bucket with some water and a little liquid dish soap, and then use the rag to wash the door. Hose the soapy water off with the garden hose. Allow the sun to dry the door completely before moving on to the next steps.

Even though you're only painting the top portion of the door, it's best to wash the entire door, so that in the end you'll have a crisp, clean look.

Step 3: Tape the Design

Choose what you would like your new faux windows to look like. You cannot go wrong with classic looks such as a rectangle, square or one with a horizontal and vertical stripe to give the appearance of windowpanes.

Once you have chosen your shape, Use your pencil and level to mark straight lines on the top panels of the garage door.

Tape out the design along the pencil lines. Make sure you press the tape down completely so that the paint doesn't bleed through.

Optional: If you're not confident in your painting skills, tape sheets of plastic just above and below the area that your painting to help prevent drips, globs or streaks of paint.

Step 4: Paint the Door

Once you are satisfied with your tape design, paint inside the lines. It is best to use a light hand to paint two to three layers so it can dry quickly and evenly. Give each coat of paint time to dry before beginning the next. Lightly touch the paint. If your finger is dry and you don't feel any stickiness, then move forward with the next coat.

Use the rag dipped in paint thinner to remove any spots of paint that found its way to where it shouldn't be.

Once the paint is dry and you remove the tape, your garage door looks brand new and modern with windows, which aren't really windows.
